Applications are invited for a Research Associate (postdoctoral researcher) to join the team of Dr Trevor Sweeney ( in the Division of Virology at the University of Cambridge to investigate the role of viral RNA-protein interactions in regulating flavivirus replication and pathogenesis. The successful candidate will probe the molecular mechanisms by which Musashi 1 enhances Zika virus replication (see PMCID: PMC5798584 for background).

Candidates should have a passion for science and hold a PhD in virology or cell biology. A demonstrated ability to produce high-quality research is essential. Prior experience investigating flaviviruses or other positive sense-RNA viruses, viral reverse genetics systems, molecular virology, RNA structure/function and RNA-protein interactions is also desirable. The laboratory employs a variety of techniques, from detailed in vitro mechanistic to cell-based infection studies (see PMCIDs: PMC6765113, PMC7229856 and PMID: 33077517 for our most recent work).

Candidates should have a PhD, or expect to obtain one shortly. Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be appointed as a Research Assistant, grade 5 on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate, grade 7, upon successful completion of his/her PhD.

This project will form part of a collaboration with the Gergely group at the University of Oxford and as such the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, coupled with excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills are essential. The duties/responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives, preparing research results for presentation/publication, mentoring graduate students, and delivering seminars.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are initially available for 3 years.
