Overview:

We are seeking a Computer Scientist to join the Multiscale Biomedical Systems Group in Advanced Computing in Health Sciences Section of the Computational Science and Engineering Division (CSED). The selected candidate will work in a collaborative research and development environment focusing on radiation biology, microdosimetry and Monte-Carlo simulations. We are specifically seeking a candidate with solid experience with GEANT4, TOPAS-nbio and C++ programming. The position requires domain expertise in radiation physics and radiation biology.

 

The Advanced Computing in Health Sciences Section (ACHS)  delivers scalable and computational solutions to biomedical and healthcare delivery challenges.  

 

As a scientist, you will have the opportunity to conduct computational research and collaborate with scientists within the group as well as with external partners which may include other national laboratories, academia, or medical centers.

 You will perform groundbreaking research on a wide range of significant problems with the fastest computing platforms in the world. This position requires novel thinking, teamwork, and discovery in finding new approaches for analyzing massive and complex data, collaborating with worldwide experts, and publishing groundbreaking results.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct research in the areas of radiation biology, radiation dosimetry and computing with applications to health sciences at the direction of principle investigators or delegated research scientists
  • Integrate Monte-Carlo based modeling and simulation with high performance computing and synthetic data generation for machine learning studies in radiation biology
  • Work on collaborative projects within ORNL and with external collaborators
  • Publish papers, participate in conferences and contribute to grant writing efforts within the group

Basic Qualifications:

  • M.S Degree and a minimum of 2-7 years of relevant research experience outside of degree or a Ph.D and 0-2 years of relevant research experience outside of degree.  Degree focus should be in the areas of Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or a field closely related to the job duties of this position.
  • A record of experience with Monte-Carlo simulation for radiation dosimetry proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference presentations

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in radiation dosimetry, radiation biology and Monte-Carlo simulations
  • A record of experience in developing Monte-Carlo simulations for radiation dosimetry
  • Knowledge of GEANT4 and TOPAS-nbio are a strong plus
  • Expertise in software development and high-performance computing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort
  • Proven ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities, multi- task and adapt to emerging technical trends
