Overview

The faculty in MBM are united by a common interest in the biology of microbes (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites) and the effects of microbes on human and animal hosts. The microbial pathogens program studies microorganisms that cause infectious diseases, with emphasis on rigorous analysis of these pathogens and the immune responses that restrict them. Program investigators direct detailed studies of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and eukaryotic parasites. Research topics include structural analysis of virus entry, viral evolution, viral oncogenes, intracellular bacterial pathogens, microorganisms that cause diarrhea and pneumonia, intracellular signaling, pathogen adhesion, genetic determinants involved in susceptibility to infection, vaccine development, and identification of novel antimicrobial agents.

What You'll Do

The Miranda laboratory seeks to elucidate the molecular mechanisms governing community-level microbial interactions during infection and their impacts. We use the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, along with several closely related bacterial species, to investigate the evolution and function of bacterial social behaviors and virulence traits in infection niches such as ocular and chronic lung infections. We seek a highly motivated Research Technician who is eager to learn and work in a collaborative team environment on projects related to this research focus. Under the close supervision of the Principal Investigator, this individual will conduct a variety of experiments following established procedures and protocols which may include bacterial cell culture, bacterial phenotypic assays, PCR and electrophoresis, DNA and RNA extraction and characterization, and other laboratory techniques. In these capacities, the Technician will also record results, analyze data using basic statistics and various software, and maintain a diverse collection of clinical isolates. In addition, the technician will help maintain laboratory equipment and organize and maintain logbooks and supplies.

  • Conducts routine experiments following appropriate protocols and procedures to achieve results

  • Performs techniques such as bacterial culture, bacterial phenotypic assays, interspecies competition assays, PCR, electrophoresis, DNA and RNA purification and others

  • Records results, maintains accurate records of experiments

  • Performs basic data analysis, interpretation and summarization, and communications findings to PI

  • Maintains laboratory equipment and orders/keeps inventory of supplies

  • Prepares stock solutions, reagents and other media
