Researcher - Population Genomics of Arctic Bumblebees

Published: 2021-06-03

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University provides a broad international environment for research and teaching. The Department's research covers three collaborative and partially integrated sections: Cancer, infections and immunity as well as genetics and genomics. More info: http://www.imbim.uu.se/research-areas/.

Description: In recent work in Matthew Webster's group, we investigated the history of divergence in alpine bumblebees in Colorado, inferring the presence of a new cryptic species and illuminating mechanisms of speciation. We now plan to extend these analyses to investigate evolutionary history and genetic diversity of these groups of species in arctic environments worldwide. The project will focus initially on conservation genetics, and will subsequently probe the genetic basis of morphological evolution and changes in genetic variation over time in these species.

More information on this line of research is available in this publication:

Christmas et al. (2021) Genetic Barriers to Historical Gene Flow between Cryptic Species of Alpine Bumblebees Revealed by Comparative Population Genomics. Molecular Biology and Evolution, msab086, https://doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msab086.

The main duties will involve analysis of next-generation sequencing data, including processing of raw data, and statistical analysis using population/evolutionary genetics methods. Involvement in sample collection, morphometric analysis, work with museum samples, molecular lab work and teaching/supervision of students is also possible depending on requirements of the projects and interests of the candidate. Involvement in writing a report on genetic diversity of these species for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency based on the results is also expected.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for this position, applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in a relevant field. Successful candidates should be proficient and experienced in bioinformatics and statistics, including scripting (perl, python or similar) and R, analysis of next-gen sequencing data, and population genomics. A strong interest in population genetics, conservation genetics, evolution and genomics is also desirable. Excellent communication skills and high level of motivation are required. Good spoken and written English is required
