First Researcher Engineer in Protein Production

Ref PAR 2021/1417

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Swedish NMR Centre at the University of Gothenburg is a national research infrastructure, hosted by the department of chemistry and molecular biology, and with a strong link to the Sahlgrenska academy. We support high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment.

We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, precision medicine, materials development, environmental problems and drug development. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN's global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, and combating climate change.

We work in an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contribute to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science. We collaborate with societal actors, such as schools, business and authorities, and we are also part of the SciLifeLab research infrastructure. The Swedish NMR Centre is located in central premises on campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.

Protein Production Sweden (PPS) is a new research infrastructure of national interest funded by the Swedish Research Council. The purpose of PPS is to coordinate and produce proteins in different expression systems for Swedish research. The coordination is intended to improve general competence and accessibility to quality-assured protein production. The Swedish NMR Centre is part of PPS, with a focus on NMR-optimized cell-free protein synthesis.

The Swedish NMR Centre at the University of Gothenburg is an internationally recognized NMR laboratory and a national research infrastructure with support from VR-RFI, SciLIfeLab and EU H2020. The Swedish NMR Centre offers access to NMR equipment for users both from academia and industry and can assist with advanced support and methods development within life science and material science.

Job assignments

The position as first research engineer has a specific focus towards service and protein production within the framework of the PPS operation and generally precludes the possibility of your own research.

We are currently seeking a coworker that will mainly work with and develop methodology for NMR-optimized cell-free protein expression. Work assignments can also include maintenance of the NMR infrastructure as well as administrative tasks. The applicant will work in a team at the Swedish NMR Centre, together with the director and staff scientists, all with PhD's in relevant areas, in an international environment where the main language is English.

PhD in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics or equivalent.

Validated experience in protein expression and isotope labelling of proteins in prokaryotic or eukaryotic expression systems.

Fluent in the English language.

Practical experience in cell-free protein synthesis, e.g. preparation of cellular extract, setup of protein synthesis in batch or continuous exchange modes of expression.

Knowledge about uniform and selective isotope labelling of proteins.

Knowledge and practical experience in collecting and analyzing NMR data of isotope labeled proteins.

Knowledge and practical experience in biophysical characterization and/or quality control of proteins.

Ability to work independently.

Good communication skills.
